The research work of the department can be judged by the presence of scientific schools, the number of doctoral and master’s theses, the number of inventions, the number of graduate students, doctors and candidates of science applicants.
Evsej Moiseevich Steblov – the first Head of the Department of Nervous Diseases since foundation, along with the administrative work was involved in scientific work and took direction on neuroinfections, so he founded his own school of neurologists – scientists. Professor E.M. Steblov prepared 5 candidates of medical sciences. It should be noted that academic B.A. Atchabarov – MD, professor, corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Kazakhstan was the first graduate student of Professor E.M. Steblov.
In 1950-1970 there was held an active scientific work at the department. Along with the problem of neural infections in Kazakhstan, began to raise the question of cerebrovascular diseases. Under the guidance of Professor M.H. Farizova were prepared 1 doctoral and 7 candidate thesis.
During the leadership of Professor S.K. Kayshibaev was developed Kazakhstan School of neurologists, and also was increased enormous scientific potential. Under S.K. Kayshibaev were made 52 candidate and 17 doctoral theses. Five of his students led by specialized departments in medical schools of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
Over the years led by Professor B.A. Abeuov were made 1 doctoral and 10 candidate theses.

Over the years led by Professor B.A. Abeuov there were made1 doctoral and 10 candidate thesis. Under his leadership there grew 3 doctors of medical sciences and 12 candidates of medical sciences. It should be noted that in 2013 there were held the first defense of the thesis Erkebaeva S.K. for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (PhD), which supervisor was Professor E.S.Nurguzhaev.
The main directions of scientific activity are defined by the tasks from the strategy of the University. One of them is the work of the MoH on the anti-aging program in Kazakhstan. Under the guidance of Professor E.S. Nurguzhaev employees of the Department PhD R.T. Iliev, PhD D.A. Mitrokhin , MD A.S. Karimova made neurological aspect of scientific work “Development of a model of anti-aging active in ensuring longevity of the elderly.” During the conducted work Nurguzhaev E.S., R.T.Iliev, D.A. Mitrokhin , Karimova A.S. published articles that reflected the results of the research: “The use of clinical indicators of aging for the assessment of neurological health (screening) of the residents of Almaty and Almaty region”, “Evaluation of the factors influencing on the state of neurological health in elderly and senile”, “The use of clinical indicators of aging for the assessment of neurological health (screening ) in citizens of Almaty.”
Associate Professor Mukhambetova G.A within the framework of the research work in conjunction with the clinical base of hospital “Aksai” in project “Identification , early diagnosis of Pompe patients in the Republic of Kazakhstan ” held a seminar , workshop, published articles and made a presentation at the scientific-practical conference “Кайшибаевские чтения”.

On December 4, 2019, the city scientific-practical conference “Modern Aspects of Neurology” was held, organized by the Department of Nervous Diseases with a course of neurosurgery. The event was supported by the Kusum Healthcare Representative Office in the Republic of Kazakhstan.
The conference was held as part of the implementation of the “University Days 5-6 December 2019” Program of events.
The purpose of the conference: to consolidate the efforts of science and practice in general, additional and professional education.
The objectives of the conference: improving professional knowledge, high motivation in the development of scientific and practical potential.
The conference was attended by neurologists, therapists, GPs, neurosurgeons, neurorehabilitologists in Almaty, interns, residents of KazNMU named after S.D. Asfendiyarov and other medical universities in the amount of 45 people.
Welcoming remarks and reports at the Conference were made by:
Head of the Department Turuspekova S.T. – European standards for the diagnosis and treatment of cognitive impairment and dementia in cerebrovascular and neurodegenerative diseases.
Professor Nurguzhayev E.S., Associate Professor Atantaeva E.B. – Sleep disorders and ways to correct them
Professor Raimkulov BN – Pain in the practice of a neurologist.
Conference participants noted that the event was of great information and educational importance, since the most relevant issues of modern neurology from the point of view of evidence-based medicine, algorithms for the diagnosis of dementia and cognitive disorders were addressed, the problems of sleep disturbance, their significance in the development of a large burden of noncommunicable diseases were addressed and outlined ways of their correction, differential diagnostic criteria of pain syndromes were heard in the practice of doctors of a stationary profile and primary health care.
Conference participants noted its positive results in terms of expanding the interdisciplinary cooperation of therapeutic and surgical specialists in the field of understanding pathogenetically determined mechanisms for the implementation of pain syndromes, sleep disorders, cognitive functions and ways to correct them.
As a result of the work of the Conference, proposals and recommendations were developed:
– to take into account the need to develop protocols for insomnia, cognitive impairment;
– to develop programs of continuing education courses in priority areas of modern neurology, taking into account evidence-based medicine;
– to develop guidelines for algorithms of insomnia disorders and pain syndromes
– To note the positive effect of the joint work of the conference participants in identifying new approaches to solving the problems and tasks of continuing medical education and hold scientific and practical conferences regularly
