The department of Traumatology and Orthopedics of Kazakh State Medical Institute organized in 1958 by Professor Edelstein GL and supervised 11 years.
The first clinical base of the department has been 60-bed department of City hospital № 2. Department consisted of 4 people: Head of the Department Professor G.L.Edelshteyna, A.A.Rozhkovoy, N.F.Petlenko, M.F.Tukubaevoy.
Two years later, the department transferred to new base – in the hospital for disabled Patriotic War with the establishment two branches 60 beds – traumatology and orthopedic. In 1964 Department was reorganized and became the chair clinic trauma unit of the regional hospital with 40 beds and the orthopedic department of the Republican hospital “Aksai” with 160 beds.

In 1971, in relation to the centralization emergency trauma care in Alma-Ata Department transferred to the city hospital № 4.

Department of traumatology and orthopedics surgery of external situations in 2001 converted into a course and was made part of the department of surgical diseases №2.
In 2007, again transformed into the Department of traumatology, orthopedics and surgery of external situations.
The department conducts training 4-5 year students, interships, residents in the Specialty traumatology and orthopedics.

At the Department elaborated and published a new educational tools devoted to the actual problems of Traumatology, where special attention was given to modern methods of diagnosis and treatment in the field of traumatology and orthopedics.
Great attention paid to the scientific research work, where the the staff elaborated and implemented scientific projects in two priority areas: ” Endoprosthesis major joints” and “Study of trauma of the proximal femur”. Also created a scientific register in the given directions and regularly comparison with European data. Creating given register allows us to take part in international congresses, conferences and publish reliable scientific data.

Alkhodjaev Saruarbek Sultanbekovich, is the author of 10 patents and copyright certificates for inventions that are used in the field of traumatology. Published 48 articles in the editions of the far, near abroad and in the RK. And also is the author of 2 methodical recommendations and 4 manuals.
