The department of roentgenology and radiology was first established in 1953. The first head and organizer of the department was DMS, Professor, Academician of the NAS RK, Saim Baluanovich Balmukhanov. From 1961 to 1985, the department of radiological diagnostics and radiation therapy was led by Professor Aikazy Gazizovich Sergazin. From 1986 to 1988, the department of oncology was merged with the department of roentgenology and radiology under the leadership of DMS, Professor Kh.A. Abisatov. From 1989 to 2000, the department was headed by DMS, Professor, Corresponding Member of the NAS RK Zh.N. Abdrakhmanov. Since 2001, the combined department of oncology, mammology, radiological diagnostics, and radiation therapy was headed by DMS, Professor Zh.A. Arzykulov.

The independent department of “Visual Diagnostics” was established in 2007, with DMS, Professor A.Kh. Hamzin appointed as the head.

Since March 2013, for the integration of the educational process, science, and clinic, the leadership of the department of “Visual diagnostics” was entrusted to the head of the department of radiological diagnostics at KazIOR – DMS, Professor Zholdybay Z.Z.

The faculty of the department holds academic degrees, titles, and qualification categories.

The staff of the department preserves customs and traditions in the implementation of the strategic development plan of Asfendiyarov KazNMU, takes an active part in the social life of the university.
