The Department of Internal Medicine is a young department of the National Medical University, founded in 2019 by merging three departments: Internal Medicine №1, Internal Medicine №2, and Internal Medicine №3.
- The Department of Internal Medicine №1 was established in 2003 under the leadership of Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor B.Sh. Tukesheva. In the 2015-2016 academic year, Professor G.M. Kurmanova headed the department. As a result of restructuring at KazNMU, structural divisions – departments/modules – were merged and enlarged in order to optimise the educational process at the university. By order of the rector dated 3 October 2016, Sh.S. Sadykova was appointed head of the department. In September 2018, the position of head of the department was taken by Candidate of Medical Sciences Sugraliev Akhmetzhan Begalievich.
- The Department of Internal Medicine №2 was founded in 2016 on the basis of the following departments:
- Department of Internship and Residency in Therapy №1, founded in 1991 and headed for a long time by Professor Dulat Seitzhanovich Polimbetov, and since 2013 by Professor S.F. Berkimbaev;
- Department of Internship and Residency in Therapy №2 is one of the oldest clinical departments at the University, founded in 1938 as the Department of Hospital Therapy. From 1952 and for many years, the Department of Hospital Therapy was headed by the first woman – a Kazakh woman who became a professor, therapist – Doctor of Medical Sciences, Honoured Scientist of the Kazakh SSR Satpaeva Raihan Abikeevna. Since 2003, the department has been headed by Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor N.E. Aidargalieva.
- Department of Internship and Residency in Therapy №3. The department was established in 1980 as the Department of Hospital Therapy №2. Until 2012, the department was headed by Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor, Honoured Scientist of Kazakhstan, Dauletbakova Maryam Ilyasovna.
Since 2012, the department has been headed by Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor, Physician-Therapist of the Highest Category, ‘Honoured Worker of Health Care of the Republic of Kazakhstan’ — Iskakov Baurzhan Samikovich;
- The Department of Internal Medicine №3 was established in 2016 on the basis of the Department of Internship and Residency No. 2, the Departments of Nephrology, Sports Medicine, and Clinical Laboratory Diagnostics. Since its establishment, the department has been headed by Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor Aidargalieva N.E., and since 2018 by Candidate of Medical Sciences Mashkunova Olga Vasilievna.
Head of the Department of Internal Medicine, Professor, member of the European Society of Cardiology Working Group on Thrombosis, member of the EOC Working Group on Heart Failure, Sugraliev Akhmetzhan Begalievich.
Currently, the department consists of 5 professors, 11 associate professors, and 9 assistants.
The department has 9 main clinical bases, which are leading large multidisciplinary clinics:

- Research Institute of Cardiology and Internal Medicine
- City Clinical Hospital No. 7
- City Clinical Hospital No. 4

- Almaty Multidisciplinary Clinical Hospital
- City Clinical Hospital No. 1
- City Clinical Hospital No. 5
The department has been and remains one of the leading methodological centres for the professional training of doctors. The department works to train responsible and competent doctors, strengthen the practical focus of the educational process and self-education, and develop their clinical thinking.
The department’s staff are constantly improving their professional competence by studying both clinical specialties and teaching skills.
